Re: HP Pavilion 8260 desktop broadband capable?

You can make even some of the oldest computers wireless capable. All you need to do is get either a wireless card and install it or get your self a USB wireless reciever and plug it in then follow the intructions for connecting that came with the wireless router.

Re: HP Pavilion 8260 desktop broadband capable?

My question is somewhat related to this. I just unboxed my new

HP Pavilion HPE h8-1080t CTO Desktop PC.

I am suddenly unclear about setting up the wireless network.  The salesman said I would NOT need a router and the new PC could function as the router.  Everything I am reading in preparation for setup seems to include a router (external) is necessary  in the config.  I would love to know whether I need a separate router or whether the card in the HP is sufficient for a hub of wireless network.  Thanks very much.

OK there are wireless networks that work on cell phone technology. If you computer has one of these then yes you are all set. If it is just a regular wireless card you can not use it has a wireless hub and will need a router.

Re: HP Pavilion 8260 desktop broadband capable?

Thanks Dan.  I appreciate your answer.  Do you by any chance know which kind of card the Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband Wireless Network Module is, or a means by which I can find out?  Or perhaps my Intel(r) 82567V-2 Gigabit Connection adapter is based on cell phone technology?  Other than that I just have 2 Bluetooth adapters.  one is called Personal Area Network and the other is RFCOMM Protocol TDI.  I a mpretty sure that the two BT devices are not what you are referring to but thought I would mention them anyway.

Again I thank you very much for your kind assistance.  Miles

Re: HP Pavilion 8260 desktop broadband capable?

The 802.11 is a normal wireless card, you will need a router. The second is for a hardwire connection. The Bluetooth is just as you said for connecting other devices.

Wow.  you are great AND speedy.  Really thanks.  you are the only person I asked that gave me the correct answer.  i.e that it depended on my hardware.  Everyone else said either yes or no and neither of those was really an answer.  i really do appreciate being able to now proceed with the knowledge you have shared with me.  gratefully, Miles
