HP Pavilion a340n Temperatures

[ Edited ]

OK I have a:

HP Pavilion a340n

XP  SP3 4G RAM

Motherboard:  Asus P4SD-LA

This week while at the computer my fan started making a lot of noise then went back to normal. Everytime I am online, running a game or videos it starts making a louder noise (I guess the fan speeds up to cool the CPU or motherboard down). I have ordered another fan. My question is what are the normal operating temps of HP Pavilion models?

I am using Speed Fan to monitor temps.  Unsure of the accuracy though.

This is what I am seeing for SpeedFan:

OK this is what I am seeing:

Ambiet:  38C

CPU: 45C

Chipset:  37C

HD0:  41C

HD1: 46C

** All are with varying: Red upward arrow, Blue downward arrow and occasionally a Red flame.

Is it possible to get a virus that messes with the settings?

I have visualized the CPU fan and it is turning, yet this SpeedFan is showing 0 (zero) RPMs for the CPU fan and the Case fan.

Could my fan be on its way out?

Any input would be appreciated.:smileyfrustrated:

Re: HP Pavilion a340n Temperatures

Normal operating temps vary. Also depends on what you are measuring, where you are measuring and how you are measuring the temps. Have you cleaned the "dust bunnies" out of your computer recently??? If not, get a can of compressed air and blow the inside of the computer case out. Make sure no bunnies are hanging around.

Re: HP Pavilion a340n Temperatures

A machine that is a few years old is probably in need of a good cleaning with compressed air as suggested above. The heatsink between the fan and processor especially will get very gunked up with dust in a short time.Pay particular attention to blowing out the fins of heatsink under fan. Removing the entire heatsink and processor  to clean and reapply thermal such as Arctic Silver usually helps a lot too, but is not for the novice.

There are several vents in front behind the front panel that can become clogged with dust as the machine pulls air through them for cooling.Probably at the bottom edge under front panel, and can be cleaned by blowing air from the inside out.

You might want to take the machine outside to do this cleaning if it hasn't been done lately. It is amazing how much dust they can collect.:smileyhappy:

Re: HP Pavilion a340n Temperatures

Those numbers you are posting are well within safe operating temperatures. The hottest temp you are posting is 46C which isn't even hot enough to burn human skin.

The Fan RPMs showing zero when you can see that it is turning means that the software is unable to get feedback from the hardware properly.
