Hi, I have a hp pavillion a410y, windows xp home edition that has a standard cd dvd drive and a lightscribe drive. these cd dvd drives open and close when I press the external button, light-up when a cd/dvd is placed in, but for some reason the reading process never happens. I used cd, dvds, and music cds to no avail. I just went through the HP recovery process, installed drivers, amongts other things but to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you. Please let me know if I need to supply any additional information.
Regards
Super Forbes

You have to replace your dvd/cd drive.
I had the same problem with mine before.
It wouldn't read/write media.
If you're looking for a new one, you check with a local electronic store (Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack) or online at newegg.com
Below is a link for a new lightscribe dvd/cd drive.
Now, i'm not sure if if your drive is a IDE or SATA drive, I believe's IDE since it's older.

Hello I have the same computer as you! Okay here is something to try. I messed up my computer due to a virus. After cleaning out said culprit have had nothing but problems. I like you tried to add a new CD/DVD drive. HP Pavilion a1410y did not come with Light Scribe. So when you add a new one your computer needs to be told which one is the default one and what to do for what files. So try this click on start then click on computer then find devices with removable storage. Then separately right click the CD drive it came installed with a properties box should open up scroll down to properties click on that the top should have tabs general autoplay hardware and sharing. Click on each ot these and set your preferences and then go to the lightscribe drive and do the same. Now under the hardware tab it should give you a list of all disk drives. On the lower righthand side should be a tab called properties. Click on the disk drive your examining then click on that properties button. A box will open up tabs general, properties, volume and driver. Check to make sure that your driver is properly working under general you can click trouble shoot. under driver it should say the name the year and so on. You can try rolling back the driver or try updating the driver.
You can also go into your windows firewall to make sure that it is enabled and not being blocked.
Then go into your device manager and even if you don't see any yellow triangles right click on anything that might have to do with those drives. Check the drivers and their status in there too.
I am sure there is probably more but this should keep you busy for at least a couple minutes. If the drivers did not install and none of the above worked could be your having the same problem as me with your windows install. I could not find my printer disk so downloaded the printer program and the hp product assistand and hp update and rebooted and unload.msi is now missing according to my computer. Don't want to wipe and start over with that file gone not in the mood to fight the computer over this she took Karate classes and kicks my butt everytime. Goodluck to you!
