Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6144f Desktop Computer. According to the specs, your wireless card supports two (2) antenna connections: 2 internal posts to connect an internal or external antenna. Please verify that there is an antenna or two connected to the 802.11 wireless card. Also, if you are attempting to use 5GHz, consider using 2.4GHz instead. I have tried using 5GHz and the signal doesn't travel very far (example; router down stairs, simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz... phone upstairs, 6 bars on 2.4GHz, 1 bar on 5GHz)

Frank, thank you so very much. All that was required was to connect the external antenna that came with the machine three years ago. Thank God I kept the original package. You are brilliant!
