How can I stop pop-ups for virus protection when I don't need it?

I have an HP Pavilion Slimline Model w1907, windows Vista.  I have virus protection already installed, but I am suddenly getting pop-ups from something called Vista Antivirus 2012 claiming I need virus protection from them - these pop-ups are preventing me from doing anything with my computer (scanner, internet, etc.).  I called my virus protection (Trend Microsoft) - they said this is a scam, but they are having trouble removing this for me - they could not figure out how to get my computer into safe mode.  Please help - I need this Vista Antivirus 2012 removed from my computer or the  pop-ups disabled.  I did not download this on my computer so I don't know where it came from.

Hi, Kimberly:

Somehow you clicked on a link to the spyware. You didn't have to download it. It downloaded itself.

Try running the system restore utility and see if that stops the pop-ups from happening.

Then run a complete virus scan on your PC to see if the software can be detected and removed.

Here is the link on how to run the system restore utility if you are not familiar with it.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore

Pick a restore point date to a time before this started happening.

Kimberly3,

If Paul's menthod does not work,. you can.

1) Turn off computer

2) Re-start, pressing F8 until selection panel opens, then Safe mode with Networking

3) download Malwarebytes free version and install:http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

4) Update Malwarebytes (at top)

5) Run full scan (45 minutes +/-)

6)  remove trojan.

If the infected computer will not allow the download, use another computer and put the file on a thumb drive. Go back into Safe mode with networking,  Then install from the thumb drive Then followed steps 4-6.

BTW, w1907 is the model number of your monitor. Slimline computers start with an "S" and then 4 numbers.

Re: How can I stop pop-ups for virus protection when I don't need it?

Thank you for the reply - I tried this but when I click system restore after following the steps, the pop-up comes up again and won't let me continue.   This pop-up is preventing me from doing anything on this computer.

Re: How can I stop pop-ups for virus protection when I don't need it?

Thank you for trying to help - first, my model # is s3020n - thank you for correcting me on that.  The above suggestion did not work as the pop-up is preventing me from completing a system restore task.  I tried what you suggested, but when I press F8 it does not go into safe mode.  This is the problem we had earlier too when on the phone with my security - he said he cannot help to get rid of this thing unless we can get my computer into safe mode, and he did not understand why F8 did not take it into safe mode.

Hi:

Try wb2001's method then.

You have a bad malware program there.

Normally system restore at least gets you to have that stop happening so you can then try to remove it.

If you can't get into safe mode, download the program from another PC, burn it to a disk and run it.

You can also try the free Kaperksy rescue disk which you can boot from and it will try and remove the virus.

You don't need to get into Windows to run Kapersky.

Thank you Paul.

You might also try entering Safe mode from Windows:http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01767672&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3376325&tmp...

Then install and run Malwarebytes from a thumb drive. Be sure to update it and run the full scan.
