How can I turn internet off when not in use on windows 7

I just set up a new computer and it automatically detected the internet connection.  What I would like to know is how to turn it off when I don't want to be online.  I used the troubleshooting section, but what it said to do didn't work.

Re: How can I turn internet off when not in use on windows 7

Sas, welcome to the forum.

In the lower right tray there should be an icon with 5 bars.  This is the Internet access icon.  Click on it and select the wireless connection that is being used and click Disconnect.  When you want to use the Internet reverse the steps and click Connect.

Please let us know if this solves your problem or not.

Sas, I presumed that you are using a wireless connection. Is this how you connect to the Internet?

Re: How can I turn internet off when not in use on windows 7

You have a few options to do this. First you can rightclick the computer and choose "Open Network and Sharing Center" then in that window click on the "Local Area Connection" Link and choose disable. Nowif you want to get back on just follow the same step but the disable button will now say "Enable". HOwever this is the manual way. If there are certain times you want it not to be connected to the internet on a regular basis you can go into most firewall's "Parental Controls" and select time slots that you dont want the computer to connect to the internet. I believe windows has this option as well. But I have never messed with it. You can also just walk up to your router and unplug it from the back.

Re: How can I turn internet off when not in use on windows 7

Howdy sas62: No problem. On you tool bar at bottom of your screen on left side you will see the time (clock) next to that is sound icon. This is a short to adjust sound. Now my freind do you see tiny bars or a color square depending on type of connection you. Click on this icon. Next to triangle. When you do a white screen apears you will see connected click on the word it then will change to disconnected. You are no longer connected. To turn it back on again just click on disconnected and then it say connected. You bars will have a yellow spot when disconnected or red square. All white bars means connected or blue square. Try not to mess arround in control pannel to much with the Internet settings. It is very easy to accidentally mess up router settings. O.k. Your are welcome. If still having troubles please repost.

Re: How can I turn internet off when not in use on windows 7

@frrw

OK first off your instructions are wrong. In windows 7 when you left click on the network icon it brings up a small window showing that you are connected with the only option being to open network and Sharing center. When you right click on it, it brings up the option of Troubleshoot Issues and Open Network and Sharing center. Now that being said. My instructions were correct. I gave several ways for them to be able to disconnect manually and on a regular time scheduelle.

Someone here posted, ( I believe it was you) saying I need to use plain language. After seeing this post I would like to retort by saying if you are going to post make sure you know what your tyalking about before telling someone what needs to be done. There is no way in Win 7 to disconnect from the internet by solely clicking on the icon. (Unless it is wireless) Which in this case it is not.

To the original poster. PLease just follow my suggestions to complete what you are trying to do.

ScorpiusDominus, please note that it was not I that made that kind of comment.  I posted the question and then provided the information that I had a small monitor that said internet was connected.  I thank you for your help, but please don't blame me.

Re: How can I turn internet off when not in use on windows 7

I wasnt blaming you. I was refering to frrw's coments about what needed to be done. His/her solution was completely wrong as in Win 7 none of what he/she suggested are options in Win 7. I am trying to help you. I am an ex-Microsoft Professional support agent, As well as an IT Admin. I have worked for Dell as a Tier 2 Government and small buisness resolution specialist. Many of the answers I read throughout these forums are inaccurate and have users such as yourself running around in circles without actually getting to the heart of the matter.

I understand that you want to stop internet traffic when you are not at the computer or durring specific times of the day.(i.e. to keep people from using the internet, usually children, and have posted a few ways to accomplish that for you. I am not blaming you in any way only the people that are posting suggestions that will only lead to confusing you more.
