How do I set up my desktop?

I am trying to set up my desktop of new computer. Cannot figure out how to set up icons on opening page showing desktop items of major interes to me.

Hi:

If you are using Windows 7, you go into the control panel, appearance and personalization. There is a menu to change desktop icons. You cna check the ones you want to appear on the desktop (computer, documents, network...)
