How to determine if all memory modules are functioning properly

Ref: Pavilion a1102n, Windows XP 32bit.

I upgraded my computer memory by replacing  the 2 existing original 256 Meg modules with 2, 1 Gig modules. This gave me 1.97 GB RAM as shown in Control panel - System - General.

I recently added 2 more 1 Gig modules. This should bring my computer to the max memory for this product. When I checked as above it shows 3.11 GB RAM. HP does note that, when adding the max memory,  the total RAM may be somewhat less than 4 gig, but loosing 0.89 Gig seems excessive.

How can I check to see if all 4 memory modules are functioning correctly?

Thanks.

SubVetUSN,

The total is correct. The average is 3.3 according to HP's link on your unit.
