Hello carol-hp, Connecting a printer to a computer should be done according to the setup procedure for your particular printer.

Can you advise if your printer is a HP Brand, and what Model printer do you have?

Usually before connecting the printer, you should run the setup application that came on a CD with your printer.

At some point in the setup process, you will be asked to connect the USB cable, making sure the power cable is connected. At this point, the software searches for the connected printer, and makes a connection and the setup process continues. This can take several minutes at times.

When the printer is properly setup, you can then begin to use it.

Normally you want have a "Print" icon on the computer. To choose to print anything, you would need to have the original application open, such as a Word document, and choose from the File menu, the print option. Another window should open and give some options as to the paper size, color, and other options. When all these options are selected, then select print and the document should be printed by the printer.

Hope this is not too confusing and is helpful.
