I have an Compaq PC with XP. Why wont it even turn on?

I have had my Compaq for some time and it has just started to have this problem. At first it would take the 3ed or 4th try for it to complete booting up. It would get stuck in the middle. Now when I press the power button, the green light turns on, the fan start running faster then normal and doesn't turn off like normal. Nothing is making a sound when the fans on. I tried unpluging every thing and pluging it all back in. Then I tried unpluging every thing and pluging only the keboard and monitor back in. Then I tried unpluging the power and pluging it back in. It always does the same thing. I looked inside of it and there was alot of dust around the fan. I wiped off some of it with a cotton swab. Nothing changed. For a wile it said it had a virus but only addware. Please help me. E-mail Miubot555@gmail.com if you have any answers.

It could still ahve a virus. If you can, update your virus software and virus definitions, then re-scan for viruses.

Yes but a virus wouldnt prevent the pc from booting. I would get a can of compressed air clean out the inside of the case. Make sure all cables are conencted securly. All video cards and memory are seated correctly as well.

Especially clean the power supply vents and the processor - canned air or a special vacuum for the job.

Have you already tried the Recovery Disk?

It might be usefull to clone your harddrive first, to save pics, music a.s.o

The Recovery disk creates a new clean XP-install. 

There's no such thing as a dumb question.
