My p6310y desktop will not shut off unless I unplug it.

My p6310y goes through the shutdown process(using start-shutdown), the power light blinks then it makes a noise(sounds like something inside restarting?) then the computer restarts. I have tried removing all usb hardware, no luck. I have removed any new programs, no luck. If I use the power button it shuts down for a minute or two, then restarts. Can anyone help me out?

We need the number of blinks and beeps to find out more. Sometimes they are in a pattern so pay close attention and write them down.

The standard test procedures for this problem can be found here:

No beeps and one very quick blink, almost like it is not even going off.

OK this is most likely the issue. Goto your Control Panel and then Power options. In Power Options you will see an area that says "When I push the power button" then a drop down of choices. It may have goteen changed to restart just change it back to Shut Off. If that doesnt work hold the power button down for about 10 seconds and it should shut off. That is not the ideal way, but if the power options have not been changed that should shut the system off.

Nope, the power option is set to shutdown. When I push the power button it shuts down for no more than 10 secconds and restarts.

Hello wilbob123, You might give the below procedure a try since nothing else seems to have worked.

If your motherboard has a firewire port, you will need to check in device manager if it is set to allow the computer to switch off the device.

You can do this by going to properties of the devices under IEEE1394 Bus host controller and going to power management.

Then make sure the "allow this computer to turn off this device to save power" is ticked.

This may not work either, but is worth a try.

Re: My p6310y desktop will not shut off unless I unplug it.

Hans,

when I go into th device manager I see the IEEE1394 you mentioned. When I go into the properties the only power type options is power data. There is nothing to check or uncheck. It says the current power state is D0 and gives a bunch of things that say they are supported PDCAP_D0_SUPPORTED for example.

Re: My p6310y desktop will not shut off unless I unplug it.

Dont just push the power button push it in and hold it in for at least ten second. This is known as a hard shut down. It is supposed to override the software and force the computer to shut off. If it does then it is a software issue. If it doesnt then it is a hardware issue..

Make sure to hold the power button in for at least 10 seconds. If it just restarts then you have a faulty front power switch and needs to be replaced. If it does shut down you have a corruption in Windows.
