How can t connect an a6142n PC running Vista to a p6674y PC running Windows 7 so that I can transfer compatible files without using a flash drive? Is there a type of USB cable that would work?

Yes, there are USB cables that can be used to transfers data/files from one computer to another. Typically they are referred to as "USB Data or File Transfer Cables". You can also use a RJ-45 Ethernet crossover cable to directly connect the computers together. And if you have a small home network with a multi-port router, connecting both computers to the router will allow you to transfer files as well.
