Pavilion 511w USB ports problem, Win xp

Hi,

I have looked everywhere, and I cannot find how to solve my problem! I looked through and tried everything that is on the HP website, but it didn't help. My problem is as follows...

I have 2 USB ports in the back and 2 in the front, I have a printer and keyboard plugged in the back two, and a hub and a mouse plugged in the front two. I was installing itunes the other day, and had two mp3 players plugged into the hub about to transfer some songs, when every USB port stopped detecting. After rebooting, I discovered that the USB ports would power the hub (it glows blue when plugged in) and charge my mp3 player, but it doesn't seem to detect that a device is plugged in...odd huh? Basically power = yes, information transfer = nope. I tried going into the device manager and updating the drivers for the USB port, disabling/enabling the Legacy thingy in the set-up menu, basically everything on the HP website.

I uninstalled itunes, but couldn't do a system recovery since it was disabled. I scanned for viruses and everything is clean; I am running Windows XP w/ 512 ram (yes, in case you're wondering, it is slow as hell) on an HP Pavilion 511w.

I was thinking the card was blown, but since it's still supplying power to the hub, then it should be good, right?

Re: Pavilion 511w USB ports problem, Win xp

Do a Microsoft system restore (not an HP system recovery) and go back to a time when it was working good.

If your PC is running slow, hot swapping USB devices can be dangerous. I've seen many cases where USB devices stop working after they disconnected a USB drive or plugged and replugged one while the hard drive was churning away. misenumeration problems are nasty - System Restore (or recovery ) is the only good way I have found of fixing the problems in the registry.

Re: Pavilion 511w USB ports problem, Win xp

Thank you for the quick response! I wish I could do a system restore, but it had been disabled...unless i'm looking at the wrong one, but i've used the same one on other computers, so I'm pretty sure it's the right one.

Should i just try to get another USB card? Thanks!
