You mention that the drives are grayed out in the BIOS - yet you are getting a hal.dll which would indicate that the BIOS has detected it.
If bugs have crawled into the power supply, then that would need to be replaced first.
I am hoping the motherboard is not the problem. If no drives appear in the BIOS and a known good power supply is connected to the motherboard, then it is likely that the motherboard is damaged and would need to be replaced (not good).
In either scenario, the drive should still be recoverable.
If the motherboard ends up being good, you should be able to do a full system recovery (press F11 when booting) - or use recovery discs.
If the motherboard is bad, you can stick the drive in any PC as a second drive to recovery your data.
