Port 443 closed. How open?

Pavilion Elite HPE-310T CTO Desktop. Windows 7. Port 443 is closed on 70.135.36.132.

Did not get this until I went to play backgammon, but had been playing it on MSN games for quite some time. I can not find out how to reopen it. I think I need to get into the BIOS.

Hi David,

If the IP address is that of your PC then you have to review your firewall settings and the use of HTTP in your browser.  Try resetting the browser back to the defaults and see if that corrects the issue.

This is not a bios issue.

Re: Port 443 closed. How open?

Hi Big_Dave,

The IP that I ran into the problem with is http://zone.msn.com/en/backgammon/default.htm?intgid=gb_FreeOnlineCardBoard+List_2_bckg

This is backgammon on MSN.

I get a message when I try and access it "You have reached this page due to errors in your authentication.
You may choose among the following Zone sites to continue. "

Previously I had gotten further and was able to ID the ports that they use. With this I was able to test the ports at:

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

Port 443 is closed on 70.135.36.132

This is how I found that 443 was closed. It appears that Norton has taken over the responsibility for the firewall from Microsoft. Maybe I need to get in touch with Norton at this time?

Thank you,

David

David,

Go to Norton's settings for the firewall and do a FIREWALL RESET.

Did you review this article?

Also,  under SmartFirewall look at Program Control.  You might need to make an adjustment for the program but this would be highly unusual if needed.

If you are typing to run the program from inside a "protected" network then you might need to contact the network administrator or network analyst.

Re: Port 443 closed. How open?

Hi Big_Dave,

I just talked with Norton and we uninstalled Norton. Nothing has worked. Port 443 remains closed. We had even shut the firewall down completely. The port is closed and to work I think it needs to be reopened and I have found no one with the knowledge to re-open it.

I did read

Did you review this article? That is where I got the list of ports used. From this site I was able to test port 443:

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

It remains closed. DOS help was unable to help and did not include information about the ports. I do not know if the port is a

Physical device or virtual? If it is physical is it part of the BIOS? Are there DOS commands to affect it?

I have 2 other computers in the house and neither have a problem playing the game. I think simply opening the port would solve the problem, but I am not certain of that.

Thanks,

David

David,

I would think that your web based program should be using port 80.

Are you using a proxy server or have it enabled on your PC?

Re: Port 443 closed. How open?

I do get this and an option to "click here to turn it on". It should be turned back on?

Thanks,

David

David,

Leave it off.

Are you using IE?

If you are using a HUB, router or gateway, then remove it and make a direct network connection and see if the issue still exists.

Are you using a proxy service on your PC?

Re: Port 443 closed. How open?

Hi,

80 is not closed. The other 2 computers are able to connect to the game and play it. I do have a rounter, but one of the other computers is running through the router and is working fine with the game. I tried it with Chrome and it still fails.

It appears that it is in only the one computer. Removing the router with the other computer wired to it would seem to indicate it is in the computer, yes?

Thank,

David

David,

We can't eliminate the router as the issue just because another PC is making the connecton.  Try a straight connect without the router.

BTW, port 443 (HTTPS) is normally blocked until you establish the secure connection with the remote site.  This article might help you with your issue.
