Welcome Bunbary.
After three failed passwords do you receive a code."When it asks for password just hit enter 3 times"
Post the code.

I have a problem with power on password on HP Compaq 8100 Elite CMT.
I have tried removing password jumper, then powering on, shutting down and putting jumper back,
and power on password remains.
When I try typing anything 3 times it gives asterisk * as error code.

Bund.
Go to security in the bios.
Change any of the passwords that are enabled.
Use that code when it asks for the present password.
When it asks for new password just hit enter.
If it asks to verify just hit enter again.
That sets the password to blank."No password"
Make sure to save changes when exiting bios.
Let me know.

Well, nobody had the Windows password as it turns out either. ( The last person to use the computer was an ex-employee. ) So I ended up just setting it back to factory defaults and all seems to be well with that.
Thanks again for your help!

Welcome Yossiv69. Try this.
The way to remove power on password or bios password is easy.
Remove main power and battery.
Remove memory cover. "On bottom"
Remove memory stick. "If there is one."
You should see a label and a piece of plastic tape.
Peel back the tape and you will see CMOS_CLR1.
Use small flathead screw driver and make contact to the 2 copper looking contacts.
Replace plastic tape, memory, memory cover and battery.
Power on and BIOS passwords gone.
Let me know how things turn out.
