Power switch problem?

I have a 3 month old D5000t Pavilion desktop. It's running Vista Ultimate and it froze (not the first time). So I had to hold in the power button to power it off. But now when I power on it comes on for 5 seconds then shuts down then powers on for 5 secs and shuts down and on and on. It keeps doing this and not going any further until I pull the power plug. It seems like the power switch is broken as if I'm still holding it in. It doesn't come up far enough to boot anything so I'm kind of stuck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Can I buy just the power switch from HP?

Re: Power switch problem?

try to check your hard drive . run diagnoistics from BIOS and  run the HDD self test .. Mostly it happens  when the Hard drive has gone Bad , try Reseating RAM modules and unplug the cables of the hard drive and connect it back again before running the HDD SELF TEST. you will get to know the results from the quick test , if the HDD is bad it will show up an error message If it is good it will run the comprehensive test .

And if the Computer is not able to Boot into BIOS then the problem might be with the mainboard..

Re: Power switch problem?

You have  a 1 yr warranty, shouldn't have to buy any parts:

Contact HP>> http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/contacthp?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3750363

Re: Power switch problem?

Thank you for the advise. Did you just send it back to HP? Or did someone fix it for you?

Re: Power switch problem?

I had this problem with my old PC. I think my brother may have strong-handed it. It's sitting under my desk until I can check into it. I will be watching this thread to see if someone comes up with an easy fix.

First, you should follow this (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph06788&cc=ca&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3688702) to find if your power supply is OK. After that, If you think your power suppy works well, you may try to clear your CMOS (refer to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01324212&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3688702#N10...). I had a similar problem a week ago, and sloved it today by clear the CMOS.

Re: Power switch problem?

Thank you, piggygenious. My power supply and CMOS are fine. Problem: The Power button doesn't catch when I push it, so it can't boot up the machine. It goes through the first 2 beeps, then it shuts down.

Re: Power switch problem?

Although my response is years after this question was posted I just thought I would let you guys know I ran into this exact scenario last week on an hp elite m9040n

The unit would power up, and power off after 5 seconds.

Upon removing the face of the unit it became apparent that the power switch would depress and snag, not returning to its upright position. then the pc would think the user is holding the power button for a forced power down and would shut off.

I moved the stem a bit with my finger and it came right up, After that it powered up just fine. However after putting the face back on it eventually did it again, so I think it may be a design issue with either the face/power button itself, or the switch. Obviously not a very big issue since I have only been able to find a case or 2 of people having this problem.

Anyways, If you haven't already replaced every part in the pc troubleshooting give that a look, it only takes about 5 min and costs nothing..
