I know I can temporarily turn this off by tapping it but how can I turn it off completely as use a mouse please.

Hi,
Open windows Control Panel, open Mouse and select the Device settings tab - you should see an option here to disable the TouchPad. There may also be an additional option box which can be checked to 'Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is connected'.
Remember to click Apply to save any changes.
