Followed suit and sent an email to the CEO as well. Maybe if enough people send something - one of the emails will get attention. Otherwise - we wait for an update that may or may not come.

Re: To all with M2N78-LA CPU fan constantly changing speed

Seems like the "update" I did on my computer yesterday from HP made the fans run even more often......Call me crazy, maybe I am just really getting tired of them.   Any update if that aftermarket fan is quieter? I do like the machine other than this one stupid quirk. I cant see why they wont come on here and save face, it would be so much easier that way. All they would have to say is "whoooooa hold on guys we will have a fix out shortly" and I am sure 90% of us would be pretty satasfied, but instead customers are dropping and they dont care, What gives?

Re: To all with M2N78-LA CPU fan constantly changing speed

Ok, so here is the update.  Went to Best Buy and tried to out geek myself.  Found a cool fan that runs just off the chassis fan, through a radiator, and then cools a puck that sits on the CPU.  I thought that was slick, but it was 120mm and TOO HUGE.  So I picked up a manually variable speed CPU Fan.  80mm.  It is a wee on the cheesy side because it came with LED, but claimed to be quiet.  Installed and set it to medium speed.  FIXED.  No more whine, drone or rev.  I am going to monitor CPU temp, but so far it actually runs cooler.  If it continues, I will set it to the low setting.  I only hear chassis fan now.  Thanks HP for the headache and ZERO help.  I mean less than helpful to the point of rude.  The fan I bought at Best Buy was called Antec 3 Speed 80mm.  It really set me back...$14.  This was a huge PITA and sucked up time I do not have.  HP truly stands for Having Problems, or Hardly Profitable,  Sadly, if you are reading this it is because you updated your BIOS to 5.16....but if you DID NOT......DON'T!!  Save your self the nightmare of the crying robot baby fan noise and the and brick wall of nothingness that is HP support.

Re: To all with M2N78-LA CPU fan constantly changing speed

[ Edited ]

MIne is running cooler, and faster and is virtually silent now with the new fan.  HP is not going to do squat so I would just buy a new fan and put it in.  It took me 10 minutes.  The one I bought (monitored above) had a 4 pin plug for power, and a lead to the mother board  (it had a three pin to the mother board too...do not use it that way).  I used the speedfan program to monitor temp....I used to run at 100c  now I am at 67-70c and my computer runs faster.  Do not wait for HP...I was losing my mind with that noise.  It will be the best $14 you ever spent.

Re: To all with M2N78-LA CPU fan constantly changing speed

Everyone,

I checked with the support and R&D teams - here is what I found.

HP BIOS version 5.16 includes improvements to enable better cooling of the system.   You may notice a higher level of fan noise after you upgrade the system BIOS to Version 5.16.  No action is required. The BIOS update includes a change to processor cooling fan speed to enhance the system. This change does not affect system performance.

There are many reasons that a system could be generating higher temperatures, such as work load, system configuration, and dust in the system.   HP recommends that you open your system and make sure that you do not have a dust accumulation in the system.

Re: To all with M2N78-LA CPU fan constantly changing speed

Why is there a need for any different cooling? My system has not changed other than this stupid BIOS update, and it has run fine for over a year without EVER over heating!!!! I have cleaned the dust out, I have pulled it away from enclosures, I have monitored when there is 0 work load on the computer and the fans are still going nuts.   This seems very stupid, they should give us an option of better cooling capacity or to leave it how it was.   I vote LEAVE IT HOW IT WAS, because this thing is so **bleep** annoying.   Is there going to be a fix or am I doomed to live with mini jet fighters in my studio?

Re: To all with M2N78-LA CPU fan constantly changing speed

I too have recently been in touch with HP techs in regard to my cooling fan speeding up due to the BIOS update...I was initially charged $46 for the tech's advice as my computer is out of warranty..I argued about paying for something they did, but finally gave in because the tech guaranteed his advice would fix my problem...It Didn't....So he recommended my case to escalations and I then spoke to a case manager...I spoke to her and complained about HP charging me for something they did and suggested she also check this Forum...There were about 8 complaints here two weeks ago and now over 50...The case manager refunded my money and sent me recovery disc's assuring me that a system recovery would resolve the issue...After hours doing a recovery and loading my files back on...GUESS WHAT....STILL HAVE THE FAN PROBLEM.... I certainly hope HP does something to help everyone, because 50 plus people and counting, could mean a lot of lost sales in future...My computer worked fine right up until this update !!

Re: To all with M2N78-LA CPU fan constantly changing speed

I spoke to HP's TCO Escalations Team the other night.  Complete waste of time.  The person I spoke with basically brushed off  the 50+ posts saying this is a small number of people and the majoriity of customers are not complaining (millions was the number he used)  So basically we are not worthy of their help.  But if I send the computer in and paid for it to be looked at, they would help.    Simply issue another update.  Idiots.   I got so fed up I ended the call after getting nowhere with them.   My computer still makes noise and I'm ready to smash it with a bat.    .
