I'm having problems with installing Windows updates. Their advice is to backup data and do a system recovery. When I use Windows backup, it stalls at 57% (for over 15 hours). I pressed "Stop Backup." But the taskbar indicates that backup is still running. I rebooted and disconnected the external backup device and it's still showing backup is running. I contacted Windows for help and was told to contact manufacturer (?). Can anyone tell me how to stop the backup?

You could try and kill the backup task in task manager.
I would manually backup your important data by using copy and paste to that external drive, you may have more serious problems going on.
