Hi:
I would clear the CMOS and see if the PC relearns the hardware.
If that doesn't work, I would have to assume the onboard NIC has failed and you will need to add a PCI or PCIe NIC.

Taking the battery out to reset CMOS has worked.

You're very welcome.
Next time all you need to do is to push and hold for 30 seconds, the little yellow CMOS reset button near the battery with everything disconnected from the PC (A/C cord, mouse, keyboard, video cable, etc.).
