how do I get the printer to recognize the second tray

It's usually good to read the manual, see pg 32. Then describe your problem or needs.

 

The 2nd tray is for paper, and is not normally active until the first tray is empty. It can be forced to become active either via the software, or by this " Boot up printer without tray 2 installed. Shut down and unplug. Install tray 2 and reboot. BAM! There it is". **
