Re: , it play’s cd’s but not dvd’s

Hi,

The following assumes you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7.

First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.

Windows 7

Vista

Check if you can now play DVDs.

If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.

sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )

Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.

Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now plays DVDs.

Regards,

Re: , it play’s cd’s but not dvd’s

Hi,

It's possible that this is actually a hardware issue as a different voltage is applied to the laser when reading DVDs as opposed to CDs - can you let me know the full version of the operating system you are using - ie Windows 7 64bit.

Re: , it play’s cd’s but not dvd’s

Hi,

First of all, just to double check, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, open up DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click on the device and select Properties - on the General Tab, is there any error code showing in the 'Device status' box?  If there is, post back with the code otherwise try the following.

Download and install VLC Media Player on the link below.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

After the installation has completed, restart the PC and then let me know if you can play a DVD using this software.

Re: , it play’s cd’s but not dvd’s

Hi,

Well I doubt it's a Codec issue then as VLC comes with the necessary mpeg-2 codec required to play DVDs - one way of testing if this is indeed a Hardware issue is the following method detailed below, but you will need access to another PC and a blank CD and a blank DVD so let me know if this is not possible.

The following procedure will test if your PC can start from a bootable disc in the CD/DVD drive - the advantage of trying this is that it will rule out any possible Windows driver error as the CD/DVD drive is under the control of the Bios when starting the PC.  So if you find that the PC will boot from the CD but not the DVD, then it's almost certainly a Hardware fault in the drive itself and it'll need to be replaced.

Using another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue CD and DVD.  Download the ISO from the link below.

Windows 7 64bit

You need use an application such as ImgBurn to correctly burn the ISO to a CD and then also burn it to a DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, insert the CD and then restart the PC and see if it boots from this disc - if it does, let the first screen come up ( this will show repair options ect ) then just remove the CD, insert the DVD and restart the PC again to see if it will also boot from this disc.  If the PC will not boot from the DVD, it may just load straight into Windows, in which case, just remove the DVD.  If it just doesn't do anything, eject the DVD and restart the PC again to load back into Windows.

Let me know how you get on with this.

Re: , it play’s cd’s but not dvd’s

Hi,

You can quite happily use your Vista laptop to create these Two discs.
