Re: recovered discs for hp pavilion a1710n

If your computer is 4 - 5 plus years old, then the recovery media for that computer is most likely retired as that machine would also be close or is retired at that point. Your best bet would be if somebody on ebay has such recovery discs for sale or purchasing a retail copy of XP but if you decide to buy a retail copy, expect to call Microsoft for support.

Re: recovered discs for hp pavilion a1710n

I believe you computer has originally came with XP unles someone upgraded/installed Vista.

You should be able to reinstall XP/Vista by turning on the pc and press F10 (xp) or F11 (vista) right away when you turn it on and you see the HP Invent blue screen.

The Recovery from the hard drive partiion D: should work if it's still there unless it was removed then you need the discs.

You should also be able to make your own set of discs using the Recovery CD.DVD Creator or Recovery CD Creation program in Windows.

If Windows fails to start because it failed to read the boot configuration data and it’s asking you to insert the operating system disc, you can try rebuilding the boot configuration data (BCD).

  1. Press F11 at boot and go into the Recovery Manager.
  2. Press Alt + D to launch the Command Prompt.
  3. Type “C:” and hit enter.
  4. Type bootrec /rebuildbcd” and hit enter
  5. It will locate the Windows installations and ask you to add it to the configuration.  You’ll need to select the appropriate number for yes and then hit enter.  (If it finds 0 installations, you’ll have to try rebuilding it manually – doesn’t work very often)
That’s it, reboot the notebook and you’ll probably have to select “Start Windows Normally” and it should hopefully load fine.

If you get an error message stating
“… is not recognized as an internal or external command” then the command has been typed incorrectly.
