screen goes black

When my PC is idel for awhile, the screen goes black. Moving the mouse around does not help.  All desktop icons are gone and i need to shut down to start all over again. Help.

Depending on the model and the OS (not given in post), it could be either the monitor setting or the OS.  Please provide more info on these items.
