screen goes dark

Hi,

 Recently my HP monitor goes dark after I start up. I see the windows 7 start up screen and then black. I've been hitting f8 to try and go safemode, but the screen goes black to soon for me to select anything. Please help.

I have had the same problem with my computer. If I repeat closing and opening the lid the screen will stay bright for longer periods until it will stay on bright. I think it is related to the switch that dims the display when you close the lid. I hope someone has an answer. My computer is the HDX X16-1040US.
