system recover 32-64

I recently purchased a computer off of ebay. The page said that it was supposed to havve a 64bit OS and 4 gb ram. The computer i received is only a 32 bit, but will only recognise 3 of the 4gbs of ram i have ( i opened the computer and checked. I contact the seller and he told me to go to the hp website and buy these recovery disks and said they would make it right. Out of concern i made a recovery disk of my own using recovery disk creation. The disks i bought from HP arrived and there are 3 recovery disks and one supplementary recovery. The directions said to put in the first disk, then turn the computer off by holding the power button for 5 seconds, which i did. The next step said to turn it on and when the conputer turns on recovery manager would open and tell me what to do. However when i turned it on hte computer itself turns on, but my monitor will not pick up a signal. Please help me if you can i terrified.

Re: system recover 32-64

Hi markgoy143,

What is your computer model number?

The memory issue you mention is actually a limitation of 32bit operating systems. They can physically only recognize about 3.3GBs as you found out. If you let us know what model you have, we may be able to give better suggestions.

Do you have Vista? Take a look at these HP Support documents regarding running a recovery in Vista and troubleshooting a recovery in Vista.

Don't be too terrified yet. I think there's a good chance you'll get it fixed.

Re: system recover 32-64

yes i am using vista 32. the model number is the d4999t. Also i was aware of the 32 bit limiting my ram, which is why i am trying to switch to a 64.

Re: system recover 32-64

Ok, something new came up. before i did this whole process i was connecting my computer with just an hdmi cord to the monitor. Out of curiosity i tried it with vga and my monitor recognizes it. Should i try the recovery again like this, or just put it back to normal with the recovery disks i made and thank the heavens i still have my computer working.

Re: system recover 32-64

Your computer was originally a configure to order PC - which means that it very well could have come with 32-bit vista. Now that you have the video working, its up to you. I fyou are satisfied with it, use it.

If you want to do a recovery: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01364440&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=365...
