upgrading processor

Hello, I currently use a 18 month old pc6300uk. I have upgraded it from 3 to 4gb of ddr3 ram, I added a HD6770 graphics card and an 800w power supply. I wish to upgrade the processor next. It currently uses an Athlon 2 x2 which is a 2.7ghz with a 1mb cache.

I want to upgrade to a phenom 2 x4 which is apparently the max I can upgrade it with(old official HP info). I am having problems figuring out which model or version will actually fit this pc (motherboard). How do I work this out? Thankyou for your help.

Re: upgrading processor

There doesn't appear to be a model "pc6300uk" on HP's support website. There is, however, a HP Pavilion p6300uk Desktop Computer with a M2N68-LA (Narra6) motherboard. According to the specs, the following CPUs used with your computer;

Socket type: AM3

TDP: 95 watt

AMD Phenom II X4 9xx/9xxe/8xx Quad-Core (Deneb)

AMD Phenom II X3 7xx/7xxe Triple-Core (Heka)

AMD Phenom II X2 5xx (Callisto)

AMD II Athlon X4 6xx/6xxe (Propus)

AMD II Athlon X3 4xx/4xxe (Rana)

AMD II Athlon X2 2xx/2xxe (Regor)

AMD Sempron 1xx (Sargas)

These 95 watt AMD Phenom II X4 CPUs should work in you system. I theory, the 9xx models should have a larger L3 cache than the 8xx models. 9xxe models are "energy efficient" models.
