why does my desktop not stay on when I power it up.

I upgraded the memory on my desktop and powered it on and it makes a beeping sound but then powers off what could be the problem

You either bought the wrong memory dimms or it is installed incorrectly or it's faulty memory.

 

What memory dimms did you buy?

this is a 512MB 184-PIN DIMM 64X64 DDR MEMORY          PC3200U         DDR, 400.CLB

It appears to be the wrong memory dimm type.

 

Reinstall the good dimms and then download PC Wizzard and determine the dimm types that you have installed. You can also use CPU-Z and then look at the SPD tab for the memory information.  Don't not mix dimms. The dimms should be a matched set (pair).
