HP Media Vault & Mac - Will they work?

I've got a Media Vault 2120 on my wireless network, and it works fine with our home PCs and wireless laptop, but just got a MacBook Pro, and can't connect.

I can ping the MV, but when I try to connect (Go/Connect to Server..., and enter the IP address), I get a Connection Failed error.  OS X has added afp:// to the front of the IP address.

Is this a Mac thing, or am I doing something wrong?

Re: HP Media Vault & Mac - Will they work?

Pretty sure that model should work. I'd call support to find out. The team can be a pain to find in the voice prompts. Call the usual HPInvent number and use the following prompts:

1) Technical Support

2) Something Else (thats not a filler, just say Something Else)

3) A HP Mediasmart Server

I've had bad luck getting to them with the "A" at the beginning of "A HP Mediasmart server"

Re: HP Media Vault & Mac - Will they work?

If it is a Mac use smb (typically windows shares), instead of afp (usually mac to mac sharing)... that should work...

OS X assumes the connection is afp, unless you specify otherwise. so if the IP of your mediavault was 192.168.1.10, for example, use smb://192.168.1.10 in the server address field when trying to connect.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Re: HP Media Vault & Mac - Will they work?

I am new to this user forum.

I have no problems seeing and accessing the hpmediavault with my MacBook (Leopard and now Snow Leopard).

I have set up file sharing in system preferences. Make sure you select share using SMB (click on the option button)

In Finder you can connect to the media vault with the device or name (usually hpmediavault).

In Finder select Go, Connect to server  in the address field type in smb://hpmediavault

It is also possible to configure your Mac to use Time Machine to backup on the Media Vault.

see this site: http://www.levelofindirection.com/journal/2009/10/10/using-a-networked-drive-for-time-machine-backup...

Re: HP Media Vault & Mac - Will they work?

Yes, using the smb:// prefix worked like a charm.

Great idea about using it for the Time Machine backups.

Re: HP Media Vault & Mac - Will they work?

With OSX Lion, we have a new challenge. Time Machine is only compatible with some network-attached storage products.
Details of the issue and one vendor's solution are noted at the following links:

http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/21/lion-drops-support-for-third-party-backup-with-a-nas-in-time-machine/

http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/03/western-digital-fixes-time-machine-incompatibilities-with-my-book-live...

Since my Media Vault is out-of-warranty, I cannot ask HP directly for status on their own resolution. Has anyone worked with HP on this?
