Re: LQ083AA Wi-fi mouse vs Linux

I do not believe that the Wi-Fi mouse is able to easily work under Linux/Ubuntu.  The mouse requires software on the host PC side, and the bundled software supports Windows 7.

The host PC needs 2 main components, it needs some type of Wi-Fi Direct type communication (under Windows 7 the software uses the Microsoft SoftAP component to create a virtual wireless adapter), and then it also needs a driver to make the mouse appear as a USB device to the host.

Hope that this helps,

Dave

Re: LQ083AA Wi-fi mouse vs Linux

Thank you Dave!

My Compaq 610 (intel core2) doesn't have Wi-Fi so I use a USB Wi-fi adapter. It works with other types of wi-fi mouse with Win7 and Ubuntu.

That's why I can't figure out why It doesn't work at least with Ubuntu.

Do you have any tip to solve this issue?

I hope I was clear in explaining.

Thank you

Re: LQ083AA Wi-fi mouse vs Linux

Thanks for your reply!  I wasn't sure if when you mentioned other Wi-Fi mice if you were talking about wireless mice in general (like wireless mice that use a USB receiver that you plug into your PC)?  The HP Wi-Fi Mobile Mouse and HP Wi-Fi Touch Mouse are a little different from the normal wireless mouse, because the Wi-Fi mouse does not need a USB receiver on the PC side.  Instead it uses the wireless (802.11) transmitter/receiver in your PC, and the mouse and PC direclty commicate with each other (the communication does not go through a router or anything).

In order to have this communiation work, the mouse and PC software have to be paired together, and there is special Windows 7 software on the PC that makes the communication happen, and makes the mouse appear as a USB mouse to Windows.  Since this software is only provided for Windows 7, there is no built-in support for Ubuntu.  What version of Ubuntu are you running, and does it have some type of "Wi-Fi Direct" support?

Thanks!

Dave

Re: LQ083AA Wi-fi mouse vs Linux

Dave,

before this HP mouse, I've purchased a wi-fi mouse on China market but it doesn't work so well (sometimes on both OS it freeze). That's why I've decided to buy HP LQ083AA wi-fi mouse for a better quality.

But, however, it connects on Ubuntu 11.10 that I use, and Win7, using the USB wi-fi adapter regularly.

My notebook, here is the link to the technical data sheet:

http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=4AA2-6359EEE&doctype=data%20sheet&doclang=EN_G...,

does not have the Bluetooth receiver integrated.

I'm not really too much skilled on computering terminology so I'm not sure if Ubuntu 11.10 has a wi-fi Direct support, so I've  tried to explain as best possible and that's why I've posted the link of Compaq 610 Tech.data sheet.

I hope It was clear, I look forward your help.

Thank you

Ros

Re: LQ083AA Wi-fi mouse vs Linux

Hi, thanks for your reply.  I was able to access the link ok, so I appreciate that information.

I would be interested to get more details on the Wi-Fi mouse that you bought on the China market, as I have not seen any other Wi-Fi mouse products.  Did that mouse ship with software that you installed on Ubuntu?

The issue is that the software bundled with the HP Wi-Fi mouse only supports Windows 7 (with the software that I described previously).  I am not sure that the Ubuntu includes Wi-Fi Direct support, and even if it does I am not sure if it's compatible with the HP Wi-Fi Mouse.  I would suspect that there could be issues because at the time when the HP Wi-Fi Mouse was released on the market, the Wi-Fi Direct mouse standard was not complete.

From what you've described, it sounds like the HP Wi-Fi Mouse is not working with Ubuntu, and with that mouse only supporting Windows 7, I am not sure that there is a way to make that combination work?

Thanks,

Dave

Re: LQ083AA Wi-fi mouse vs Linux

I apologize Dave,

I was very rushed and a little distracted. I have better read about the characteristics and I realized that this is a simple bluetooth mouse. I'm very sorry!

Forgive me, Sorry, I probably stolen precious time to you.

Anyway for the sake of accuracy here is the link for the mouse:

I'll wait for some news or tip about installing on Ubuntu.

Thanks for your support and again forgive me :mansad:

I hope to meet you in the future

Thans,

Ros
