Simple Save Backup Question

My father has purchased a simplesave backup drive.  While it is simple to use, I was unable to find an answer to an important question.  If a file is deleted from the computer, will it be retained on the backup drive?  Dad would like to remove some files from the computer (music, photo's, etc) to free up some space, but it is unclear from the simple save manual if these files will be retained on the simple save.
