Battery Replacemen t G71-340US Notebook

My G71-340US - relatively new, the icon appears replace battery. I have charged, re - checked, re charge and the icon still remains red. After about 3-5min. the laptop shuts down totally until i plug it in. Why is the battery failing on a relatively new computer? Help, thanks,
