Re: Break Key

Generally speaking, in Microsoft based operating systems the quickest and easiest combo is to use the "[CTRL]-[C]" combination.

Re: Break Key

I am also having problems with finding a break key for a HP Pavilion dv7-6b51ea Entertainment Notebook PC. I have tried all the possibilities listed in these posts and none seem to work.

Re: Break Key

Mine is an HP g4 series, but maybe this will work on yours too.  Here's what I found worked for the break function.

CTRL-ALT-FN-SHIFT

Re: Break Key

Thank you for your reply, debwalke, but that is not working for me in either Access or Excel.

Re: Break Key

The CNTL ALT FN SHIFT key sequence did not generate a break for me either.

Re: Break Key

I wrote to HP and they replied that I should try the on screen keyboard (osk.exe), which works, you can press Control on the keyboard and click Pause, but this is completely unsatisfactory for me. Other people have mentioned AutoHotKey, a free utility, but it also runs in background. I use my laptop for advanced macro coding so none of these are satusfactory, and i do not believe there are satisfactory for gamers, either.

I chose to use  http://www.randyrants.com/2008/12/sharpkeys_30.html to remap keys such as putting the dratted media keys back to functions keys, but first, I needed a break key, and for that, I used this registry hack:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,46,e0,44,00,00,00,00,00

Which I got here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19285247.aspx

Needless to say, but I will say it anyway, tampering with the registry can be fatal to your computer, but if you know what you are doing, this combination has worked well for me.

Re: Break Key

Thank you, remoul.  Good info.   I too tried a keyboard mapper (not sure which ones I tried) for the accursed function keys, but they had issues with the F5 key because there wasn't a 'non function key' action assigned to the key.  So they didn't register the keypress when mapping.  How did you handle that?

Re: Break Key

F5 was not on my todo list, but if I find a solution, I will get back to you.

Re: Break Key

I found this: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02035108&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_US...

Which disables the fn for function keys. i have tested and I am deliriously happy.
