Choppy trackpad response after a few minutes

I have an HP Pavillion dm3 with Windows 7. Recently, I have been experiencing problems with the trackpad. It will work fine but after a few minutes of use, the tracking becomes "choppy" and the pointer "jumps" along the path I move my finger and is sluggish. To temporarily fix the problem, I turn the trackpad off and back on. The tracking becomes smooth again for a few minutes but becomes choppy later on.

 

I use a mouse but sometimes I do not always have it with me. Is there a setting tweak or update that fixes this? Thanks.

Things to try

 

Install the latest version of the touchpad software

 

If it is the latest, uninstall the trackpad software and reinstall it.
