Closing laptop cover

Do I need to hibernate or shut down before closing cover.  Or, can I close cover and then when ready open it without first shutting down or hibernating.

Hi, 

you can close the cover at anytime even if its not hibernated but when leaving for a while e.g.:12 hours turn it off fully to stop wearing down the components
