My Compaq Presario CQ62 does not have a numeric keypad or a numberlock/keypad function. On other machines, I use this mostly to enter letters with accents by pressing alt plus the appropriate numeric sequence; for example, alt+0233 to get the accented e that should be at the end of the name "Jose". Is there another way to type accented letters, or is this truly an English-only keyboard? Thanks!

As Pankay said Method 3 should work on your system. Num Lock key is below the home key on your keypad. You can switch on the numlock and start using Fn+ALT+the numeric combination.

Thanks for your suggestion, but this keyboard does not have a NumLock. The key below the Home key is PgUp, not NumLock. If there is a way to program one of the function keys to act as a NumLock, I'd love to know how. Then all I'd have to do is paint little numbers on the appropriate keys. :-)

You can install a small third party utility that will help you to do so:

Thanks for your suggestion, but (sorry I didn't mention this before) I need something that will work in OpenOffice and Outlook Web Access. I just tried, and the key combinations did not work in those programs. For example, in OpenOffice Writer, either ctrl+' then e results in a plain e, holding down left ctrl+'+e all at once produces no visible character, and right ctrl+'+e changes the alignment from left to center. Do you know of any other possible solutions?

The simplest method for inserting special characters is to select them from the special character dialog.
To insert a special character:
- On the Insert menu select Special Character. In the dialog that appears, all the available characters in the current fonts will be displayed.
- Select a character by clicking on it. If you do not see the desired character, it may not be available in the current font. If it is not there, try changing fonts.
- After selecting one or more characters, click OK to insert the characters at the location of the text cursor.
On certain platforms, OpenOffice.org does not have certain characters available in any font, including emdash and curly double quote characters.
