When I am using the keyboard on my dv-7 1245dx the cursor jumps around and I cannot type a sentence without moving the cursor back to where I was typing. This happens in documents, email, and other activities. It was a problem when I first bought my computer with Vista. Now it is a major problem with Windows 7.

Hi,
Jumping cursor issue is one of the common problem mostly seen in Windows Vista and Win 7 usually while typing in word or outlook. From my previous experiences what i have noticed that there is no straight fix for this problem. You may have to try different steps but cannot say which one will fix it.
First you can try these two steps which have worked for me in the past. If it doesn't fix the problem then there are other steps that we can try.
- Go to Control Panel ---> Mouse---> Pointer Options and then uncheck "Hide pointer while typing". If it doesnt work then try disabling the trackstick if you have one
2. If the above step doesn't work then you may have to download and run this small program called Touchfreeze
--------------------------------------------------
*Some of the solutions may include steps directly related to registry changes which may cause serious problems if not used correctly. Use these steps at your own risk

Thank you very much! I tried no. 1, but didn't work. The touchfreeze appears to be the solution in my case. What a relief!

I had a lot of improvement when I installed TouchFreeze-1.0.2. However, the cursor still occasionally jumps around when I'm typing text. What would be the next solution to try?

Hi,
Do you any external USB mouse with the notebook. If you are using an external mouse then you may have to go to the touchpad settings screen and then select the option to disable the touchpad when using a mouse.
To turn off the touchpad when an external mouse or other pointing device is present, you can type "Mouse" in Start Search and then click on the Mouse option that will appear at the top.
Here select the touchpad tab and check "Disable Touch Pad when USB Pointing Device is present" This should again fix the problem.
[Alternatively, you can permanently disable the touchpad of your laptop by clicking the "Disable Device" in the Touch Pad setting]

I have a brand new HP Pavilion G7-1070us with the same problem to the point where it is almost unusable. The cursor jumps willy-nilly about every five seconds in email, word, anyplace I am typing. Will the Touchfreeze work on my machine?
I think there may be a larger problem with the touch pad - the little on-off switch does not respond no matter how hard I press it. This morning, in the middle of a project I got a screen that apparently showed the pad had been turned off. I could not restore it, the system froze, and I lost my data. In fact the pad just turned off again and I can't turn it back on. This is just the tip of the iceburg with this pad/cursor. Do you think my machine is defective?
Managed to boot out and restart without losing this - but at wits end.

Never mind my question above. I too downloaded the touchfreeze and it seems to have taken care of everything. I will put my Kudos on the entry from the HP employee who answered the question for someone else. Thank you.
