My Elitebook 6930p has a mouse seemingly with a mind of its own. OS is Windows XP, SP3. The mouse often exhibits "phantom" clicks and can highlight text and cut/paste on its own or highlight a file and delete it. I have tried disabling the touchpad but this still occurs.
It is as if there is a short in the motherboard, spurious electrical impluses causing the mouse to act on its own.

Not even close. Every Elitebook here in the office misbehaves this way. Short, design flaw, whatever.

What makes you think that someone isn't using RDP to play with all of the notebooks in your company network?
It staff do get bored.
Does this happen when the notebooks are not online?

I use RDP...this is not RDP behavior. I can be administering my terminal server and have to be careful that the mouse does not hover over a system file and delete it.

OK.
Now that I think about it I do remember how, on occasion, the touchpad on my Toshiba Satellite drives me nuts. I have large hands and perhaps you do as well. It only happens when I am typing something and without realizing it, part of my hand, perhaps my palm, touches somewhere on the touchpad. This only happens to me with smaller notebooks. When I am using my HP Loaner dv7-4180ea, it does not happen. When I am careful it doesn't happen with the Toshiba.

erico

I appreciate your attempts, but you need to believe first what is being said. It is time for HP to chime in on this. Surely they monitor this board?

Try reducing the sensitivity of the touchpad. Every brand of notebook is different. If there is a synaptucs icon in the systray you might be able to right-click it and find where to adjust the sensitivity. If not, then go into Control panel and look for tiouchpad settings in the mouse section. There could also be a Synaptics section in the Control Panel. My Toshiba Satellite has neither.

Thanks, but I have even turned the touchpad off because I prefer using the stick anyway. This behavior is intermittent. When it's going bad, I would not even be able to type this note. An example would be when using Sametime messaging.
My company uses Pointsec encryption and that could be a factor, however the problem exhibits itself as if a short in the motherboard.
