Did you ever solve this?
I have the same problem. HP are our IT support and they have replaced the touchpad (twice) and the motherboard - to no avail.
This is an intermittent problem but on days it is happening it just won't stop - it never does it when I'm with HP though - I don't think they even believe me. I have tried disabling the touchpad too and using an external mouse - the phantom left clicks continue. A real issue if you are hovering over the wrong thing or it decides to highlight text while you are typing.
Sometimes I can't even shut it down properly because the left click won't un-click.
Weirdly this problem never occurs when it is in the docking station - is that the same for you?

Yes, indeed that is my problem. In fact it is making it difficult for me to even type this response as it jumped to the beginning of my sentence and caused me to type over. As with your experience, it doesn't happen when docked (just tried to ruin my typing again).
For me HP does not recognize this problem. My belief is that there is a short in the motherboard or wherever I/O is wired.

I'm not sure about that as my motherboard has been replaced - unless I've been unlucky enough to have a faulty one twice.
All my colleages have issues with this particular model but I am the only one with this specific issue. It's really odd - so much has been replaced that it is barely the same machine yet the problem persists.
Doesn't seem to be software either as the drivers have been updated.
