Forgot Windows Vista Password on HP Pavilion

My son cannot remember his Windows Log-in password on his laptop and we do not have a reset disk or USB.  Short of taking it to a repair center, is there any way he can reset the password himself?  Thanks for any and all help.

Model number of the laptop would be a help...Does it have a recovery partition installed on the hard drive?
