HDMI Outlet not detecting digital camera on Pavilion dv5 Notebook

The Product is an HPPavilion dv5 Notebook PC, product number FR977UA # ABA

Windows Vista op system

I've had two digital cameras and the computer has not successfully detected either of their presences when the appropriate cable connection is made through the HDMI outlet. I think something is wrong with the outlet, not the cables, since this has happened twice. What can the problem be fixed?
