What is the best way to insure the longest battery life? When external power is available should it be connected to the computer only when it is on and being used or at all times. Of course it should be connected when the battery needs charging.

discharge & charge is was Li-ion like, long periods of minimal activity are not so good but 2 to 4yr is all you get as a norm as they decay slowly from day they made regardless how you use them.
Charge control when plugged in prevents any overcharge so leaving them in is no problem, biggest problem is people who use the notebook 99% on mains power for a year then wonder why battery not seem good in a emergency scenario.
