HP DV7-1264nr Battery Problems? Laptop shutting down earlier each time when on battery power

So bear with me here.  I can't find any information on this anywhere and can't understand whats going on.  This laptop is 9 months old btw.  This started 3 months ago.  Normally the power settings (since I purchased it) shut the laptop down at 10% battery power remaining, up until 3 months ago.  It then started to shut down at 15% with no warning.  A couple weeks later, 20% and so forth up and up over the next few weeks until it started sutting down at 35% about 2 weeks ago.    Now as of last night it is shutting down at 40%.  I have changed nothing in the power settings (it's all still factory settings which actually says shut it down at 5% but it has never done that - wish it did.)  I ran the HP diag. and it said the battery condition was Good, no problems.  I have searched forum after forum with no luck.  Has anyone heard of this problem or have any idea what is going on here?  I'm just plain stuck.  Thanks.

Re: HP DV7-1264nr Battery Problems? Laptop shutting down earlier each time when on battery power

Same problem with my dv7-1025nr which is around 13 months old. It would warn me at 10%, then shut down around 7 which was fine. Now it gives me no warning and shuts down at 17-30% which has caused me to lose some school work when I was working on it. Nothing drastic, I just re-type it but it is annoying.

Re: HP DV7-1264nr Battery Problems? Laptop shutting down earlier each time when on battery power

dv7 1270us

mine has shut off at 74% and i started to notice that it hasn't been warning me the battery is low.

to confirm my battery is being read as right as it makes sense it is.... when you plug the charger in and reboot, it shows the current battery life.

i've also had problems where it shuts off even with charger plugged in, but it doesn't respond and shuts off anyways for some reason.  then i reboot after getting confirmation from the white led lights on the side corner of the laptop (power, charger, harddrive symbol or something [3 cd's stacked on top of each other]) and it's still shut off during bios load.

i wait a while and unplug, replug everything (also verify i actually have power coming into the charger; you'd think a surge protector with other things on and working with a valid light saying 'hey im working' wouldnt be enough) and sometimes the same thing happens. sometimes it starts up again and you can see in the bottom right corner in taskbar (next to clock) that the battery symbols shows battery is indeed not dead.

wtf's up with that? and why has it been a few months and hp has not addressed this?

If you bought the laptop within 6 months, you SHOULD be able to send it in to HP for free. Contact them and then become aggravated is the best advice I can give.

Go to Control Panel-->Power Options. Select performance and set the display to never turn off and hibernate/sleep to disable.

Now perform a full discharge (until pushing the power button does nothing) and then full recharge. If all is good ( you are back to @ 3 hours or so for capacity) go back and set your power options back to power saver or balanced and set your display shutoff again. Don't forget to set hibernate or sleep to your desired setting.

The problem you are having is related to not doing a discharge/charge cycle. The best time to do that is shortly after you buy a laptop and then once in a while. That will extend the serviceable lifetime of the battery.

Your battery issue happens with all brands of laptops and virtually all devices with rechargeable batteries.

erico

"Go to Control Panel-->Power Options. Select performance and set the display to never turn off and hibernate/sleep to disable."

erico,

I can set the display to never turn off, but I cannot find anywhere to disable hibernate/sleep. In the advanced settings there is Critical Level Action, but there is no "do nothing" option for On battery. Unless you know of some advanced user method of disabling hibernate/sleep (like in setup mode) when On battery, then perhaps the best that can be done is to set the Critical battery level to 0%.

But this doesn't seem like it would work anyway, because like the OP, my system shuts down well before the set level. It's set to 3% and shuts down (hibernates) around 60%. And like the OP, the HP Battery Check says it's "good."

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
