I felt an obligation to others to post this:
Last week, I purchased an HP Mini 1000 with MIE and had 2 basic problems, which seem to be consistent among others that purchased this product. I'm not saying that these are the only issues...just ones I wanted addressed.
- HP MIE Restore Utility is not available (but is mentioned in the documentation that ships with the product and on the product website)
- Webcam seems to have an issue where it's too dark (but this may have been addressed in a recent update)
I called the regular support number, and I was bounced to enterprise support because it was a linux issue. A ticket was created and escalated. I just got a call from the technician (very nice guy) and he proceeded to inform me that "enterprise support" is refusing to support MIE because it's a consumer product....and consumer support doesn't have any resources for this. So in essence (and this is verbatim from what the gentleman from enterprise support said), HP just doesn't have the support structure in place for consumer linux.
I hope that HP addresses this issue quickly.
Caveat Emptor!!!

Alonso, sorry about the mixup. Witha new operating system especially there was a little confusion.
Calling the standard HP support line for the Mini 1000 series should connect you properly. You may need to be transfered, but should not go to commercial/enterprise support.
By the way, the HP MI recovery image creator is now available:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os
The application will require a 2GB or larger USB thumdrive. It will create a bootable image onto the thumbdrive and you can then recover the system if needed.
Note that you can also recover the MI image by pressing [ESC] at boot.
The dark webcam is due to it not being a 'low light' webcam. While some tweaking is possible in applications, the best solution is to use bright light source.
There are some external blogs that demonstrate a method of hardware modification, but that would void the warranty of the product.

i received my mini 1110 NR two days ago. my call was routed correctly,
but it was these forums that lead me to the solution
( not my -still open- ticket 8023708943 )
the agent was able to walk me through re-imiging from the restore partition
+ setting up my wireless network, but we did not succeed.
it was clear he did not have any experience with ubuntu/MIE
but he was following a very detailed guide.
through other posts + trial & error i discovered, pinging anything
when connected with WEP 128 resulted in 60-70% of all packets getting lost.
after upgrading my router to WPA2 things where golden !!!
those of us tech-savy enough to reach out to the community
utilize a much broader knowledge base then any support team could provide.
i think this forum, ubuntu's and myhpmini ARE our support path
this is how i found many useful tweeks like sound fixes, and UI customizations
one thing is for sure
the next time i have an issue, this is where i will turn to first
i can only hope someone from the right departments trolls these forums
so that the efforts of the community can benefit those calling
