I'm having some sound issues with my HP Pavilion dv4-1155se.
The problem is that the sounds distorts when there is playback.
The distortion is not always present but it distort once or twice every minute even when the only applications running are "windows media player" and "windows sidebar".
I haven't noticed any difference with the distortion when the cpu is running at a higher load.
This laptop is only 3 weeks old and I have only installed google talk and google chrome.
Help will be appreciated.
My specs
HP Pavilion dv4-1155se. / windows vista home premium 64 bit SP1/ AMD turion X2 ultra @ 2.20ghz/ 4 GB Ram/ Purchased August 2008

It crackles and it happen on the onboard speakers, headphones, bluetooth stereo headset... etc so I'll try to test if it is the wireless interface.
Indeed, that's the problem. It suddenly disappeared and it only comes back when I enable the Wlan... bummer.
Thanks for the help fletcher, I'll follow your advice.

What do you mean by "distortion". Is it crackling, getting quite, somthing else? Does the problem happen only out of the onboard speakers or does it also happen when you plug in head phone? If it only happens out of the speakers then it might be a speaker problem and you'll need to have it serviced. If it happens out of headphones also then it is probably an audio card problem. If it is an audio card problem then I would try reinstalling the driver from RECOVERY manager (i think the driver for that model is conexant high definition audio driver). If THAT doesn't work, then it might be wireless interferance. Some DV4's do not have enough shielding between the wireless and audio cards and this causes feedback. Find the wireless switch on the notebook and turn it off. If you turn the wireless off and the distortion suddenly goes away, then you know that is your problem. If you do have a DV4 without enough shielding and you are still in warranty, you have it sent in to have that fixed.Message Edited by iam_fletcher on 11-23-2008 05:24 PM
Regarding intermittent cracking and sputtering sounds while listening to CD’s or music files:
Let's not get in too much of a hurry in shipping off your PC to be "fixed" and in doling out the “Kudos” and “Accepted Solutions”.
I’ve just purchased a dv4-1120us and was having issues with the sound as described in the previous posts. It was intermittent so I thought “what could be happening intermittently to cause this?” I guessed that the WLAN might be the culprit and started running tests with the WLAN on and off. Sure enough, that’s what was causing the crackling and popping, not my Rice Krispies.
I then came to this website to get verification and found this post, the apparent only one regarding this problem that I can find.
I groaned at the possibility of having to send in my 10 day old laptop but called HP support anyway. Seventy-three minutes later the issue was fixed.
I had known about reinstalling the sound driver and even updated it too, although I believe it was the current version anyway. That didn’t work. I then did not pursue it further after having read this forum’s post on the subject. This was a mistake.
The HP tech lead me through the usual steps, some of which I had done. But I hadn’t updated the BIOS or the WLAN driver. The WLAN driver update has done the trick so far.
SOLUTION: Go to hp.com and click on Support and Drivers. In Step 1 select Download Drivers and Software (and Firmware). In Step 2 type in your model number. Hit Enter. On the next page select your operating system. Down a bit on this list you will see Driver- Network. Your WLAN driver should be in there. Download it.
Hope this works for you and I’ll be expecting Kudos and Accepted Solutions soon.
Keys.

You and "FirstLappy" above have a slightly different issue than the original poster. However, the solution I suggest in the post above may work for you as well. Update the all of drivers individually.
I also had the issue of NO sound a few times as well. Re-starting the computer always fixed it. Now that I've updated all of the drivers neither of the two issues posted here have reoccurred.
Good luck.

Is there a moderator that marks posts as "Accepted Solutions"? The solution to the original poster's issue is not what "iam_fletgher" posted.
