I have a Pavilion dv4-1225dx, bought it new in early january 2009. Lately the fan is 90% of the time ON.. the laptop is pretty warm and I'm thinking it may have some cooling issues? Also, twice now, I've gotten the blue screen of death, rebooted, and everything was fine. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
-Jeff

I have also been having this problem as of late, and it only seems to be getting worse. The fan constantly runs rather high. Even a simple task such as running WMP causes the fan to run almost at max. I am also an avid gamer, and while I realize that can cause the fan to run, the laptop gets so hot its almost unuseable. I'm thinking the cooling system might be to blame. I have a colleague who runs similar (practically identical) specs but a different make and has none of these problems. I've even gone out of the way to purchase a cooling pad to ease the problem, but to no avail.
For example as well: I play a game for a period of time and I suddenly get periods of 30-40 seconds where framerate drops dramatically and programs/games are almost unuseable. If anyone has any suggestions they would be welcome. I'm more of a software person, not so much hardware, so any advice would help.
Forgot to mention I'm running Windows 7 H.P.

Updated the BIOS for my laptop and the framerate problems have disappeared completely, but the fan issue still remains. I've stopped just short of cleaning out the inside of the vent themselves. I've only gone with a can of compressed air to them.

Im having this problem with the fan and also the framerate. How did you update the BIOS? Did you buy a new chip and installed it yourself or what? Please let me know.

I also have Pavilion DV4. I had this problem too. The causes were.
1. Some processes were taking most of your processor share (upto 50% or more for example avp.exe, svchost.exe).
2. A graphics card intensive application is running (eg. Games).
3. There is large amount of dust in the PC so there is problem of ventilation which makes the PC hot and trigger the far to speed up to cool the PC.
4. The cooler or heat sink is not functioning properly or it is somehow disconnected from the processor.
Solution
1. Run Task manager and sort the process list based on processor share and see which application is taking the highest. Once identified, repair, remove or end the process.
2. Stop playing games or other GPU intensive application or use cooling pad if you still want to use them.
For 3 and 4Take it to a nearby hp service center and tell them the problem.
To know more about your PC download and install SpeedFan from here.

Bought my HP pavilion1225 dv4 Jan 09. Had Dell 5 years no problems..No heat.. Fell asleep one night and blistered my leg. Kept it on cooling pad with fans. Had it in to Best Buy Dec 2010 with a virus and asked them to please check as it got too hot. Was told OH some of them do that. Warranty expired the end of January.. Im po'd at Best Buy as they have to know that is a problem. Now my motherboard is gone and will NEVER buy an hp PRODUCT ever.. Bought a Toshiba this time and hope for better service. At a new best buy , guy gave me a place in New York to contact as they replace motherboards for less than a hundred will check it out. Im going to take issue with Best Buy as they could have replaced motherboard and know of this problem but everybody passing the buck ntil warranties run out.
Will call Hp but they never want to answer the phone without a price. {Content Removed: no legal discussion permitted}
Think I will check out my Toshiba model before the 14 day return policy expires.
