this sound exactly the same as the problem i have had with my pavilion dv4000. after about 6mnth of ownership this problem started and it went in for repair however this didnt last long and 2 years on i have jsut had to have a new hard drive because during one of the turn offs it broke my hard drive!
if it is the same (and it sounds like it) its an overheating problem that seems all to comon with hp laptops from reading forums both here and elsewhere - it also doesnt seem particularly fixable however make sure you have all your work/pictures/music etc backed up off your computer becasue im now dealing with losing a lot of stuff because it ruined my hard drive. i have found that trying to get maximum air to the bottom of the laptop, not running it too long and not trying to do too much at once elps lenthen the time between shut offs but as soon as i can affrod a new one im scrapping the HP for a brand that doesnt overheat so badly!

great, same here with the warranty. here's the steps from online manual for removing heat sink to try cleaning.......simple......hahaha
Before removing the fan/heat sink assembly, follow these steps:
1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn thecomputer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.
3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet andthen unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.
4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 46).
5. Remove the following components:
a. Hard drive (see Hard drive on page 51)
b. Optical drive (see Optical drive on page 59)
c. Switch cover (see Switch cover on page 61)
d. Keyboard (see Keyboard on page 65)
e. Speaker assembly (see Speaker assembly on page 63)
f. Display assembly (see Display assembly on page 68)
g. Top cover (see Top cover on page 74)
h. Audio board (see Audio board on page 85)
i. USB/power connector board (see USB/power connector board on page 81)
j. System board (see System board on page 82)

I have an HP dv6815nr, out of warranty. It will just shut down randomly after being on for a while. Just recently started doing this. Ran the debug utility from Microsoft and it seems to indicate a problem with the processor.

Now 3 days in a row without a glitch.

i had the same problem and sent in to the center it seem that the technician disable detect the problem. you need to put you notebook on without the AC adapter just run in battery. it happen to me randamly when with the AC cord...Im DV6 user as well.
