HP Pavilion g6 laptop running slowly!

I have an HP Pavilian g6 laptop on Windows 7. I bought it in December 2011.

When the charging cable is not connected, the laptop seems to run very slowly. The cursor is unresponsive and when I play music or watch videos, the sound quality is very poor and the streaming is constantly interrupted. It does none of these things when charging. This means I have to be plugged in to use the laptop.

Any advice would be appreciated.
