HP ProBook 4540s touchpad does not work

I realise this is a problem a lot of people have that can be fixed by simply double tapping the little dot on the touchpad to enable it.

This however does not work for me and my touchpad still will not respond.
i have plugged in a usb mouse and everything works fine with that.

I have updated the drivers and still nothing.

My laptop is the HP Probook 4540 s, Intel Core i7 3612QM @ 2.10 GZ, 8gb memory.


If this were due to something having spilt on the keyboard and touchpad, is the touchpad replaceable? how would i clean the touchpad? (aside from wiping over the surface) 
I was using my laptop at a gig when i first noticed the touchpad not responding. although i am not aware of any drinks being spilt on it, it is possible.
